Meet the Team
Steve Thomas
Founder, Trainer / Assessor
Steve is a commercially focused Chartered Accountant with over 20 years of experience. With an initial grounding in corporate turnaround and insolvency across NZ & AU Steve later moved out of the Chartered environment and into senior finance and eventually CFO/CEO level roles in the corporate world.
With both a Chartered and corporate career, coupled with having owned and operated 3 of his own businesses, Steve realised the skills gap of many aspiring small business owners, bookkeepers and accountants. Having owned and operated his own CFO advisory and bookkeeping business for 3 years, it inspired him to set up the Australian Institute of Finance Training (AIFT). Its mission being to help new entrants in the Accounting field develop real world skills and train existing business owners to better understand their financials and the business world around them.
Meryl Tierney
Trainer / Assessor
Meryl began her career in education working in the government sector and has over 25 years’ experience as a classroom teacher and school principal. A change in career path saw Meryl complete a Master of Professional Accounting and was commence as a tax accountant in a large, busy firm. Through this time she had the opportunity to return to her love for training as she mentored and trained new tax consultants. Eventually becoming a registered Tax Agent herself in 2014 and subsequently obtained her own accounting practice.
However, her passion for training remained and she continued to participate in opportunities to provide training for employees in government departments covering a broad range of topics. Her current role allows her to combine her two interests – education and accounting. With a long and diverse training background and current accounting and taxation skills, Meryl has the perfect blend to support students throughout their learning journey and is excited to see students succeed and attain their goals in the accounting profession.
Mary Ann Deluvio
Student Services / Administration
Mary holds a B.Sc in Accounting Technology and has held accounting support positions for a number of years. However, she preferred the more varied roles of Administration and customer service/support and has spent the last 5 years working in front-line customer support roles. Mary heads the AIFT Admin and Student Support services at and is most likely the first voice you will hear when you contact us!
Kim Thomas
Trainer/Assessor, Short Course Development
Kim has spent over 10 years running SME businesses following a career as a practicing Veterinarian. Now a qualified trainer and with business & commercial knowledge coupled with a bookkeeping background Kim brings a wealth of ‘real world’ experience to the AIFT team. Kim will also be providing assistance with developing our short courses library.
